Week 5: Mon – Fri

Monday :-

We did the Long and Short vowels file folder games, and he actually did pretty good. Actually we did a lot of long and short vowel activities this day.

I also started going for morning walks with H today. Last week, it was with S. The only reason I’m doing this is for Hajj, which is still not 100% confirmed, but I learned that that’s how it goes for the haji-to-be in the US.

I dropped S at the equine center and then we all went to the library while waiting for her to be done. She has started to volunteer there, and last week on Friday, she had her safety training. At least, I hope she is doing something she loves and craves doing while racking up volunteer hours for her high school documentation.

Later in the day, or was it last week, Z had asked me about a handwriting book  I had bought for him a while back at Walmart but haven’t started using. I told him that that’s for when he can writing his letters all nicely and neatly and that he can write sentences and then draw a picture. Lo and behold, he brought me the book, and started showing me a page that he had furnished. He had written a few ‘sentences’ and drew a picture of it. His handwriting was pretty good that I asked him,

“Who helped you do this?”

“No one! I did it myself!”

MashaaAllah! Alhamdulillah. May this be made easier and easier. Allahu Akbar!

Tuesday:-

Since we had gotten a lot of library books yesterday, we read some of the book. Today we read,

He really enjoyed these books and seem inclined to work on skip counting. We did the Skipping to Oregon file folder game too, and I helped reinforce the concept of skip counting using MUS math manipulatives (wow, these have lots of barakah it seems like). He’s been asking,

“I want to do multiplication!”

So I told him, “We have to learn skip counting first then.”

He was a bit hesitant at first, but eventually seems to enjoy it. He got significantly better at counting by 2s today. I taught him to count 1 number with a whisper and the second one out loud. He seems thrilled by that technique, but I could see him counting mentally when he was skip counting by 2s, 3s, and 4s. With 5s, he’s pretty good already because of the minutes on the clock that he does everyday with the Calendar Notebook.

He seems to have somewhat gotten the hang of Long and short vowels too. I found a couple of books at the library and read these today, and he seems to have gotten a better grasp at Long O and short O.

We also did the McDonald’s Farm file folder game and he told me he didn’t want to do the Long vowels part but only waned to do the syllables part. So we did, and he seems to get it right away. But I did manage to get him to do the long vowels part anyway and he did very very well alhamdulillah.

We also read Penny and Her Marble

I noticed that he’s getting better at reacting and engaging with anything we read. I was asking him why Penny didn’t feel good, and he kept saying,

“Because someone is coming..” (he meant that someone would come to claim the marble)

I also asked him, “So is it right for her to take that marble? Can we just take something that we find like that?”

He looked grim and shook his head. And he added, “It’s like Finders keepers!” like what we had read when we read the story of Cork and Fuzz (which he loves!). So apparently, he understood this concept alhamdulillah. But alhamdulilah I’m happy that he seems to answer questions better during reading time. I was worried before about his hesitance in answering questions, but alhamdulilah now it seems like he’s ‘gettin’ with the program’.

I feel like we actually did a lot today. We also did the Past, Present, and Future Tenses file folder game though by that time I was tired and we didn’t really do it all the way. He seems to still be new at the concept so that one can use more revisiting inshaaAllah. He did do a lot of worksheets today though that dealt with graph reading, measuring, addition, subtraction, grammar (singular plural verb), handwriting. I took the worksheets that I had printed last year from Learning Pages. I find it a good way to cover areas that I might not think of. At first, before, I was hesitant in giving these to him because he didn’t seem like he wanted to do worksheets, and I didn’t want to struggle with him but he seems more inclined to them now alhamdulillah. So he actually spent a lot of time on that.

I haven’t been doing hifdh with him that regularly though. I realize that I tend to put off or aside things that require me to cajole and coax him to do, and hifdh is one of them. Subhanallah. On top of that, IQRA reading too. Sigh. Suffice it to say, I feel bad about this. Need to pick up with this.

The 3 older kids started Biology today. Today N and H’s load significantly became heavier, because they have Biology at 8- 9am, then American History at 10:30 – 11:30 am, then Literature at 12-12:45. Starting this week, they will be very busy. I looked over N’s planner too and hope that she abides by it and disciplines herself. This is such a struggle for me and her subhanallah. It wears out my patience and I’m sure it wears out hers too.

I also just realized that PSAT is coming up in October and was suddenly in a frenzy about this. S is not too happy about having to take it again. I asked hubs and he said yes, she should. So, he will register her tomorrow and so she will have to study for it again and take it while we’re at hajj (if we go inshaaAllah). I also told her to look over her high school plan for the rest of the years that she still has remaining. I worry a bit about that, but keep telling myself that Allah will take care of it because she is doing something now that is to seek His pleasure. I also realized that with S’ high school planning, I wasn’t that experienced, so a lot of her courses are poorly planned. It’s much better for N and H though. I just ask that Allah makes it easy for S’ entrance to college. I have to look into enrolling her at the local community college.

I also realized that N is pretty good at vocabulary and I realized that one of the reasons why is because she really wants to learn it and as she says, “So that I’m not dumb.” I hope the therapy this semester helps her a lot biizhnillah. H is not too keen on his Worldly Wise assignments though. N is promoted by the Home2Teach instructor, so right now, I’m just waiting for H’s instructor to email me his promotion (or not), and then will register both for the next writing classes. N will be taking Writing the Hero’s Journey inshaaAllah. I’m looking forward to checking much improved essays from all of them.

In preparation for Hajj, I’ve also asked around and arranged for friends to check the kids’ essay while I’m gone.  I also just realized that for their American history, Biology, and Ancient Egypt assignments, I am the one in charge. Great.

Subhanallah, after all these years, I also feel like I’ve never really learned to be patient in juggling multiple children while homeschooling. I can multitask but I’m not patient while doing it. Snapping is a very common occurrence when I’m juggling teaching and tending to more than 1 child at one time. If anyone wants to ask me how I homeschool multiple children, I have to say,

“I’m not the best person to ask.”

Somehow, Allah nurtures them and they learn anyway. All credits to Him. Alhamdulillah.

Wednesday:-

It was rainy almost all day today. Z did his calendar by himself and he did a lot of worksheets after that. I grew impatient because I had so much to do today, another Dr.’s appointment and classes, and cooking. Yes, after all these years, I still get agitated having to cook while teaching the kids. We didn’t read any books today because he was dawdling with his worksheets, so ‘school’ with me ended just like that, with me leaving him because he was dawdling too much.

He did good on his worksheets though. There are questions on how many more is 10 than 5. That is a new concept for him, but he kind of got it, but didn’t really like to do it. He dealt a lot with subtraction and I noticed that it’s harder for him to do subtraction and for a while he got confused while using the ones and ten rods. I really had to sit there and supervise him on it. We did Skipping to Oregon too today, and I showed him the pattern with the skip counting by 4s, but I don’t think he really got it. He quickly wanted to be done with it, so I didn’t really push it either.

He did show comprehension of using exclamation mark though when he answered No on a question on the worksheet. He said, “Exclamation mark point.”

Lately he has been ‘scared’ of the bathroom, especially of bathing and using the toilet. I don’t know why.

Anyway…

The older kids started their Ancient Egypt Currclick class today. S is taking it also for 1/2 credit and it is during her AlHuda break. I reminded N to use the Cornell method of note-taking in these classes. She hasn’t been using it. in the therapy, they worked on reading strategies for novels. I figured that in summer, they helped her with understanding non fiction, so this is good that they’re not working on helping her with understanding pieces of literature. May Allah put barakah in this. Ameen. She is supposed to use the neon pink notebook her therapist lovingly cycled her bike to get, and fill it with reading strategies homework that she had given N.

Thursday:-

I want to maintain a walking routine in the early morning everyday. We started Last Friday and so far we have been doing it everyday. The only thing is, I don’t like walking too late when all the kids and parents are out for school, so it’s a bit tricky now that fajr is later. By the time we’re done with our post-fajr Quran/Arabic, it can get too late to walk outside. It has been balmy lately so it’s really nice weather for walking. Like today, we took an hour to just do the exercises for the Allama family for Arabic. I already hear a lot of cars out, and I have to take H for his shot and bloodwork, whcih has been put off so much so that today is the last day to take him for it. I’m feeling grumpy and agitated with all these doctor office visits which has been going on for 2 weeks now and will still be going on next week too. I hate having to leave the house for stuff like that. So that’s been contributing to me being snappy and yelly too nowadays. Sigh…I just hope things taper down a bit before we have to go.

We read All About Eggs and What am I?

He had already read these books on his own though, so the guessing was not so much guessing on his part. I did try to have him pick out rhyming words in the What Am I ? book, but he soon grew tired of it when I also asked him what vowel sounds he hears from the words. He really doesn’t like the Phonics stuff. I am contemplating whether I should continue, but I have a very strong feeling that I should because it will be needed later on, even if he already knows how to read. I did it with the older kids too and my own personal philosophy of this matter is that we should teach both. It’s just a matter of which one first to teach. Since he already knows how to read, obviously, Phonics come second, but it gets a bit strange at times because it’s like going backwards. However, it doesn’t mean it’s any easier though..not for him at least.

He did a lot of addition on his own, and seems to really enjoy it too. I had him do the First Grade Sight words too, which initially he didn’t want to do. I coaxed him to do 2 pages and he seems to better grasp creating a sentence now. Alhamdulillah.

So basically it seems like our ‘school’ schedule goes like this: He starts with the Calendar Notebook, and then we do various things of random choice on my part and his. There will be some days where we will read books, and there will be some days where we won’t. It all kind of depends on how I’m feeling and my work schedule. Most of our activities utilize the file folder games, and worksheets, and when I feel like it, online games. At times I will also let him watch Reading Rainbow. I have to admit that with all of this supervising, I have little energy and patience left for his IQRA and hifdh, though I tried doing it at night. With Hifdh, I need a lot of patience, as does he, but I also don’t want it to become something where I’m always angry at him for, so when I don’t feel like it, I leave it. Which in turn also makes me feel bad. As for the IQRA same thing. It makes me wistful when I think to the times when he would just come and understand that it’s part of his daily routine and bring the book to me and read it, even if he negotiates 1 line per day. Same thing with hifdh, though he’s a bit more reluctant with this one. He’s having a hard time now with Humazah ayat 4. So maybe, I should just muster up the energy and discipline to resume the IQRA with him on a daily basis. But realistically, with this hajj business coming up, I am already stressed out. So I don’t know. It makes me feel very bad that this is not a regular routine right now especially seeing that we may go for hajj inshaaAllah. Astaghfirullah…These are one of those days.

Friday:-

I didn’t really do much with Z today though he did work on his Calendar on his own alhamdulillah. Took H for his bloodwork in the morning. I had classes back to back and by close to noon time, I don’t feel like doing much anymore. I still need to check the older kids’ work though.

Arabic Numerals

When the 3 older kids were younger, I had made these Arabic numerals with construction paper, and then placed the corresponding number of stickers and sandwiched these between contact paper. I think we’ve lost them. I had also made a sequence of scabbing using the same technique and we still have these, or at least some of them. I haven’t really focused on Arabic numerals with Z as I did with the older kids, so today, we continued doing the Hujjaaj Addition activity with the spinner. He is able to help himself write the numbers with my directional instructions (for numeral 4 ; Slide, run, jump). He is even making up his own directional instructions when writing the numbers.

We finished the addition sheet and I put it away, and moved on to the hujjaj game. We did the five little hujjaj game and I took the opportunity to focus on Arabic numerals with him. What I did:

  • Instead of singing five little hujaaj down by the haram, I said khamsah little hujjaj down by the haram
  • I asked him to count how many hujjaj are left first in English
  • then as we lined up all the hujjaj, we counted together in Arabic, him saying it after me
  • then we started all over again with the song, and everytime we took one hujjaj out (I took the highest numbered hujjaj out) I asked him to count the remaining hujjaj with me in Arabic
  • as we did this again and again (since he likes the song), by the end of the hour, he was saying the order of the numerals in Arabic by himself though he still hasn’t mastered all of them

I dropped N for her appointment and then drove S to the local high school for her PSAT. She is more anxious about being around the other high schoolers than taking the test. I have to admit, I was too. So I waited with her till they went in the classroom. I drove home, attended my class, and even though I’ve done this for years now, it never is easy when you are home, attending an online class, and you have your kids come to you asking for this, that, and don’t seem to understand that you can’t be bothered because you are in class.

After my class ended, I worked with Z because as I was doing my class, he had taken out his lapbook and started to try doing the hajj sequencing activity by himself. I was actually surprised by how much he remembers because we actually only did it once. He also played the memory game with H. He also played with the numbered hujjaj by himself. So alhamdulillah, he really seems attached to the Hajj lapbook and is able to play with it by himself. So far so good alhamdulillah.

But then came time for me to wrap it up because I had to go pick up the girls. So it has been a busy day so far and it’s only noon now. I have to nap before my class today, and hope the kids spend their time productively because I don’t think I have the energy to nag at them.

Zulhijjah Activity Continued

We continued where we left off, and I still haven’t gotten my bearings, but at least Z cooperated more and didn’t really make those breathing objections. I did the hujjaaj addition  activity with him but only up to 3 equations because he soon tired of it.

He would spin the spinner (which H had mounted on cardboard), put the number of hujjaaj on the Kaabah, spin again, add that number of hujaaj and count the total hujaaj and then write it in the worksheet.

He couldn’t write 4, so I showed him how to write it. Slide, run, jump. He was able to do it with that visualization. For number 5, it’s drive, jump, circle and for 8, it’s S and then join. He actually loved writing the numbers with that kind of instruction/tip.

the spinners that H worked on the night before. He glued the pushpin in, glued the spinner on cardboard and then made a mount for it. It was fancier than I imagined but it was pretty easy to use. The only drawback is storing it with the lapbook since it has the protruding pushpin in the way.

We quickly then moved on to the memory game. He is pretty good at memory games mashaAllah. We did a couple rounds of memory game and I worked on his lapbook while he shuffled and rearranged them for a new round. It took me quite some mapping, visualizing and planning while working on his lapbook and juggling that with answering his questions and playing the memory game with him was not easy.

I folded a posterboard in half and again in half. I used all 4 quarters of the inside part, added some appendages to the inside page so it would fit some of the pieces and then used 2 quarters on the other side for this shown in the photo.

I had some mishaps with making the pockets for the pieces too, had to use the glue gun but in the end Alhamdulilah, it worked out. I also told him the story of Ismail and Hajr, using the prop I had made for the older kids years back in 2003. I had to look for it for I had forgotten where I had stored it. It was all dusty, but still pretty vibrant in its colors and still useable alhamdulillah. He was excited when I opened it, and I had to restrain him when he started to put up the pop ups.

After all 3 stories are told and the Kaabah is built and Ibrahim a.s. proclamation for Hajj is responded to every year with huge masses of hujaaj heading for Hajj.

Good thing I did this. Otherwise I wouldn’t have even remembered when we made this. When I made this it was for Eid Al Adha. I had the 3 kids do a show and tell on the story of Hajr and Ismail a.s. to the Malaysian uncles and aunties. H was 4 then, and the girls were 5 and 6.

Then I told him the story of Ibrahim a.s. and the slaughtering of Ismail a.s. and used Z himself as a prop when talking about the slaughter. I could tell he had this grim expression as he was listening to that story, which shows understanding, and I wonder if he understood the concept of Allah testing Ibrahim’s obedience. Then I told him the story of Ibrahim and Ismail a.s. building the kaabah. After I was done I asked him which story he liked best. He said the building the Kaabah one. He keeps asking to go to Makkah and see Ibrahim a.s.’ footprint at maqam Ibrahim. He also said he doesn’t like the dream story (the slaughtering story).

After the stories, I told him I couldn’t do anything much with him anymore because we had to get ready to go to the library, and so he wanted to help me work on his lapbook. He helped for a bit and then got distracted and went to N. He also complied when I told him to do some coloring and worksheet activities, which is surprising, so Alhamdulilah!

I was hoping it would take him some time to work on this so I could work on the lapbook without being interrupted but…

I am not done with his lapbook yet, but hopefully will have it done when he has finished all the worksheets in the pack. It’s coming along pretty well so far alhamdulillah.

With the older kids, what I did was assign them Zulhijjah assignments. N is to research the virtue of the first 10 days of Zulhijjah. H is to research the Hajj rituals. S is to look for ayaat in the Quran that pertain to Hajj. Our Zulhijah starts tonight alhamdulillah, so I decided to have them all watch this clip so they can implement it as soon as Zulhijjah kicks in.

Before we watched it, I asked them what they already know about the first 10 days of Zulhijjah. After we watched it, I asked them what they now know of the 1st ten days of Zulhijjah. Then I asked them which new information surprised or struck them the most.

N : If you’re doing hajj, you don’t fast during Day of Arafah

S and H : that it’s obligatory for everyone to pray the Eid prayer

Then we talked about action items that we can incorporate during these 10 days. And I asked them to choose action items for themselves and to really narrow it down so there is more possibility of them doing it.

We talked about increasing in seeking forgiveness and how our sins can really be a huge barrier between us and Allah’s obedience, and even our du’a. So, we talked about ways to make istighfaar.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Whoever says, ‘Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,’ one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea. (Book #75, Hadith #414)

And we talked about starting a new naafil prayer to add to the existing regular ones. Fasting (the kids love fasting and have always loved to fast from a young age. They would eat suhoor and refuse to go back to sleep, and played in their ‘tree house’)

May Allah increase us all in taufeeq to utilize these 10 days and make any good changes we incorporate, permanent. Ameen.

Tomorrow is S’ PSAT at the local high school. I just called them today and am to drop her off at around 8:45 am. So, tomorrow will be a little hectic. Wednesday is already hectic enough with our online classes. S is to shower right after fajr and attend her class already dressed and ready to go, because her appointment is at 8:15 am. So as soon as her class finishes at 8, we’ll go and I will drop her off. S also will be getting ready during tajweed time in her class, and we will all three leave at 8. After I drop N, hubs will stay with her and I will drop S off at the high school. Then I will go home, attend class, and after class ends, will pick up N, and then S. Then I have class in the afternoon. I’d better not have to take Zyrtec tomorrow. I can’t afford to be drowsy throughout the day.

Quran Mazes, PSAT, Planet Earth, Famous Five, Ancient Britain

I’ve been brainstorming ideas for projects to do with Z, while also worrying about S’ PSAT(which we registered her for yesterday), and S’ other stuff. For Z, I looked through what we have on our shelf and found the Quran mazes I had bought for the older kids years ago. I have forgotten what I did with the older kids, and with Z it seems like I have to start from scratch all over again!

But, he seems to have a penchant and fascination with mazes, which I have been noticing since he got those free coloring books and activity books from organizations sometimes. So when I took out these Quran mazes books of the prophets, he took to them like teens to IPads. I scanned and printed one book, because I want to be able to resell those books we have.

However, yesterday, the girls and I went Henna-crazy. We experimented with Henna designs on our hands, and hey, S turns out to be quite good with the henna designs! She seems to have a knack for these creative artistic stuff, in a different way that N or H though. They have all their artistic streaks, but in different areas. It’s amazing to see how creativity can span and transcend boundaries and areas. It reminds me of a sister who has a knack for performing arts, but says that she has no talent for drawing or painting but that her siblings do. Again, it’s that artistic abilities in different areas. So we spent the whole morning henna-ing. So I didn’t really do any ‘lesson’ with Z, that I intended to do, on the Quran mazes. But, what he did do was, he sat down and went through all those books and just traced his way through the mazes with his finger. He even asked me to do it while racing with him. Day and night, he did it. Even today, he’s still going through the same books and tracing through them. He was overjoyed to have those printed sheets that I stapled for him to actually trace with crayons.

What I had in mind though, was to do a hands on project with him about the stories of the prophets. I am currently thinking of an ark project on Prophet Nuh a.s., with the water gushing forth from the earth and from the sky, and then the waves hovering above them and finally the ark landing on Mount Judi. I can already visualize this 3 sequence scenery. I just need to put them to action. I was also browsing through Crayola’s art projects yesterday while waiting for the henna on my finger tips to dry. I intend to archive projects I am inclined to doing later and linking to them so I can refer to them easily inshaAllah.

Yesterday though, we did end up watching Planet Earth, though I noticed that Z is not that predisposed to sit and listen to the narrator. He would watch the scenes, though yesterday, he was more fascinated by the Mazes than by what’s going on on Planet Earth. I had checked out Bear Snores On, Scholastic Video Collection from the library on Tuesday, and we put it on the day before yesterday and yesterday. I find that it’s really good in terms of enhancing and increasing vocabulary and just language skills, but again, Z doesn’t seem to be too inclined to listening to it. I am a bit worried about this, but inshaAllah, continually reading to him will hopefully help too somewhat.

I finally called our local nearest high school to ask about S registering for PSAT this October. An email reminder from College Board is what actually set me to motion on this, alhamdulillah. So hubs went over and registered her. I”m actually surprised at how helpful they are, as I’ve always hesitated to call them before, with the preconceived notion that they are not too friendly towards homeschoolers. But they’re very nice.

One problem though. As I read through the booklet last night, it says that if you’re going to spend more than 4 years in high school, you have to contact NMSC and let them know. So I called them this morning before Z’s therapy sessions, and they said I should just write them a letter explaining why S will be taking more than 4 years to finish high school and that she should still take this year’s PSAT and also next year. So that settles it. It will give S I guess an extra chance to be familiar with the test and actually taking it. Looks like we will only have her fly off after October 17 then inshaAllah, if we get her paperwork done by then that is.

Recently, we’ve been hooked on watching Enid Blyton’s Famous Five. I LOVE Enid Blyton books. I grew up reading them. When I came to the US, I looked for her books at the library, but couldn’t find a lot. I was disappointed, actually I still am. I love the values in her books, and I love the simplicity of it, though some may balk at the level of language in her book. I find it quite innocent in this age where even cartoons for children reek with the culture of romance. Sure, there are shirky stuff in Enid Blyton, but she has stories that don’t have any shirk in them, like the Famous Five, St. Claire’s Malory Towers, etc. The kids have also been reading Enid Blyton books, my old books that have gone ‘tatters’ and some have even disintegrated *sob*sob, but at least I got to pass these on to my children, if not my grandchildren. They had watched the BBC documentary of Enid, the real Enid, and when once I had suggested we watch Famous Five, they weren’t interested.

Now all of a sudden, I suggested it again and they’re hooked. I am too. Subhanallah, I love the English countryside!

We like this version though, not the 70s version. This version seems more true to Enid’s books and the setting, even the attire seems more appropriate.

S is doing Ancient Britain right now for World History. I had read Edge on the Sword by Rebecca Tingle and approved it for S to read for her World History. Since we had trouble finding historical fiction for Ancient Mesopotamia, I told her she can go ahead and start with Ancient Britain. I listed out research and essay questions based on the book, and she started working on them. I also checked out a DVD from the Library, Monarchy with David Starkey, but S hasn’t started to watch it yet. She did say she’s not that interested in the royals but more on the common people. I told her that in order to know how the common people lived, you kind of have to know a bit about how the royalties lived.

Watching Famous Five I feel kind of gives this a bit of a wholesome feel to it, because you can see the history of England in bits and pieces as you watch the children go on their adventures. One time they stumbled on an old Roman ruins, and another time, they went exploring on George’s Kirrin Island.

At least now, after knowing a bit more about British history, sparked from reading historical fiction in that era, I can somewhat appreciate all this, and I hope the kids can too, though I have a feeling that right now, they might not be too thrilled about it, but at least I hope it can spark a budding interest at the very least. You never know. S already claims she likes history now. I still want her to develop her writing skills, so one way or another, I have to make it somewhat academic and imposing. You can’t have everything and there will just be some things you don’t like to do that you have to do. That is the reality of life. This is part of homeschooling too, like it or not.
